The sports betting industry has added jobs and contributed to the state’s revenue. The benefits of placing sports bets online include:

  • Banking: Hassle-free depositing and withdrawal methods
  • Mobile Bets: digital bets are made on authorized Android and iOS apps
  • Safe, Legal, and Regulated: You don’t have to worry about signing up at unlawful sites

New Jersey Sports Betting Law

In January 2012, the state’s Governor Chris Christie signed a legislature that would allow sports betting in New Jersey.

The law allowed the New Jersey casinos and racetracks in the state to offer to bet on college and professional sports. However, bets were not allowed on college events happening in the state. What’s more, bets were not allowed on New Jersey college teams playing out-of-state games.

The major sports leagues (NCAA, NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB) filed a lawsuit against the state to stop sports betting. They use the PASPA Act to support their federal lawsuit. The leagues won the case and sports betting was banned in the state and issuing licenses was also barred.

In June 2017, New Jersey took the case to the Supreme Court and challenged the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). In May 2018, SCOTUS overturned the act saying that it was unconstitutional. This allowed all states to decide on whether to legalize sports betting or not.

New Jersey legalized sports betting in June 2018. In August 2018, the first bet was taken. Currently, there are 17 legal online betting sites that are regulated and licensed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.
